Birgit Meyer
Birgit Meyer (Ph.D., University of Amsterdam, cultural anthropology) is Professor of Religious Studies at the Department of Religious Studies and Theology at Utrecht University. Her research focuses on the transformation of religion in our time, and how scholarly work in religion is of eminent concern to understanding the shape of our world in the 21st century. Her publications include Translating the Devil. Religion and Modernity Among the Ewe in Ghana (1999), Religion, Media and the Public Sphere (edited with Annelies Moors, 2006), Aesthetic Formations. Religion, Media and the Senses (ed, 2009), and Things. Religion and the Question of Materiality (edited with Dick Houtman, 2012). She is vice-chair of the International African Institute (London), a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, and one of the editors of Material Religion. In 2010-2011 she was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (Wissenschafstkolleg), Berlin. In 2011 she received an Anneliese Maier research award from the Humboldt Foundation.
